Student riots in France

A French student raises her arm in protest against French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin's youth jobs plan in front of a banner with a drawing depicting a French riot police holding a bludgeon in Toulouse, southwest France Thursday March 16, 2006. The escalating protests center on a new job contract that allows employers to fire young workers within their first two years without giving a reason. This is designed to give employers flexibility, thereby encouraging them to hire more young people. Tens of thousands of French students marched, chanted and whistled in renewed nationwide protests Thursday against a new labor law, as the government tried to maintain a united front for this pivotal test of the country's direction.
